If it's good enough for the likes of Jack Welch (CEO of General Electric) and me (a Sole Trader) then it's good enough for you. 6 Sigma will work for any organisation, regardless of function or size. From Sole Traders to Multi Nationals 6 Sigma can help eliminate waste and boost profits.
6 Sigma is not a miracle cure, it will only work if you use the methodology properly you must follow the DMAICS cycle at all times.
The DMAICS cycle is the heart of 6 Sigma. It's what good organisations have always done. There is nothing new in 6 Sigma, it is a collection of very tried and trusted tools and methods. What must change is our discipline towards the use of these tools and methods. The DMAICS cycle is explained briefly below.
The Define phase is concerned with the definition of project goals and boundaries, and the identification of issues that need to be addressed to achieve the higher (better) sigma level.
The goal of the Measure phase of the 6 Sigma methodology is to gather information about the current situation, to obtain baseline data on current process performance, and to identify problem areas.
The goal of the Analyse phase of the 6 Sigma methodology is to identify the root cause(s) of problems, and to confirm those causes using the appropriate data analysis tools.
The goal of the Improve phase is to implement solutions that address the problems (root causes) identified during the previous (Analyse) phase.
The goal of the Control phase is to evaluate and monitor the results of the previous phase (Improve), to ensure that Improvements are real and set by ensuring that the changes are documented and the Improvements become the New Standard.
The purpose of the Share phase is to ensure that everthing that is learnt in every 6 Sigma project is Shared throughout the organisation. You don't want to waste effort re-inventing the wheel. Celebration of success is also an important area within the Share phase. We can arrange training and briefings in all aspects of 6 Sigma for example:
